Artist Statement:
The folklore of mermaids dates back many centuries worldwide. This fantasy creature embodies the intersection of beauty, mystery, seduction, and danger. Danger and darkness, when paired with physical beauty, there is a double-edged sword where fear of this savage creature meets attraction and lure. Shattered mirrors with sharp, knife-like edges features in my work to portray danger. Other materials, such as acrylic paint, portray the beauty and power of mermaids. To accentuate the softer, innocent side of this folklore, embroidery. I couldn’t help but ponder how where there is beauty, there is fear. We hold beautiful things that are precious most close to us. Maybe because we fear losing them the most. Is there inherently fear in all beauty?
