Statement:
When There Were Birds: Sutra for Belonging is a transdisciplinary installation consisting of sculpture, sound, and projection. It will be the fifth iteration of an evolving work. The sculptural element consists of four suspended forms made of vine and hair and a floor form made of vine. The audio track and video projection will include field recordings of my rural place in Ulster County NY.
When There Were Birds began as a response to the decimation of the global bird population reported in 2019. The work has been previously presented 4 times: in a white cube gallery, as a performance piece, in a decaying barn inhabited by pigeons, and a loft space of a different barn. This will be the first iteration incorporating sound and video.
